Social Networks

I like facebook, I really do. It is that site which reunited me with some of my childhood friends. It is that site which helps me be in touch with family and sometimes I wonder if it helps me to be mentally active 😛

But then I met an aunty who said that the only way she comes to know what her children are doing, is by logging in to fb and I was thoughtful.

I mean all of us (mostly all) are busy putting statuses, I did this, I did that, sometimes boasting, sometimes proclaiming but in midst of all that we are missing out on so much. Like

1) Face to face contacts are less nowadays, we meet on fb, we chat there. Period. My own neighbour with whom I can just shout over the window and can yap away; we meet on fb.

2) Even family relations have altered. Busy executive meet their spouses on the web only.

3) Parents come to know of their children through their statuses. No, you need not tell everything to your parents but how many of us really make friends of our parents.

4) Humility is a rare virtue nowadays. I went there, I did this….. I know in today’s world self promotion is required but humility isn’t it required too?

These are just my observations and is not intended to hurt anyone. The conversation with aunty triggered all these thoughts and thought of posting them here. So go ahead post your statuses, I am all ears (eyes?). 😀

  1. Its all how one markets Themself.. ot go to the next step in the ladder ..

but yeah i have same views on social netwroking thats why i hardly use them .. people who want to talk to me can CALL me or come to my house the doors are open.. otherwise Its not that important IS IT …

  2. Social networking has its own adv. and disadv. It is helping me a lot in my business. But many want to become friends and send friend request , when I meet them personally they hardly find time to talk. Relatives are no different. We have to get to know about them only thru’ net working sites. Even when there’s a birth in the family we understand it thru’ these sites.Calling up and sharing these type of news stopped ages ago. I don’t know what kind of society we are living in.

    • Attitudes have changed. Everyone likes long distance relations. Friends are ok but some ppl do have problem with maintaining relationships. A cause for this is the high cost of living.

  3. Social networking can get addictive and sometimes meaningless too. I’ve cut down on my own time spent on FB after the initial euphoria :). Even posting pictures is reduced due to security concerns. But, it is a great place to catch up with really old friends and colleagues and to reach out to a number of people.

  4. I am regular on FB, but thankfully have been in touch with dear ones over phone and mails too.
But I know what u mean! A friend (or should I say classmate?)recently told me about her baby and I had no idea she had become a Mom 😛 She ws surprised that I had not seen her update on FB abt it. Hmmm
